New Laws 2017

Happy New Year!We hope you experienced a joyous holiday season and that your New Year is off to a great start! We always start the year at Ridley Defense by examining the new laws in California for the upcoming year. While there are many new laws related to all areas of the law, we focus on those that affect criminal law. Here are a few noteworthy new laws that we think you might find helpful: Phone Laws Change AGAIN!  Remember when it was okay to tell police officers that you were only holding your phone because you were using GPS navigation?  Well, those days are over.  The … [Read more...]

Be careful tonight!

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and that you have amazing plans to ring in the New Year! As I'm sure you can imagine, I have a slightly different perspective about celebrating on New Year's Eve. Every year, I get a flood of calls from good people like you and your friends who get in trouble tonight. Here are three tips to help you get through the night: 1. Just don't drive. There's no reason for it. Take Uber or a taxi or splurge and get a town car. It takes all the pressure off your "designated driver" and makes sure that no one is on the hook for a DUI tonight. 2. 3 Things for a DUI…

The start of December always sees a huge increase in the number of DUI cases filed in our courts. I get calls from good people who have never had a run in with the police who find themselves in a world of hurt. Here's three things to remember if you or your loved one ever gets in trouble:   1. Any doubt if you are under arrest? Ask! If you don't give a breath or blood test, you will lose your … [Read more...]

DUI Marijuana

I was having lunch with some business associates this week and I ran into a friend of mine who's a CHP officer. He said, "I bet you're really excited for marijuana to be legalized this week! You're going to be very busy..." Then he shared some insight with me... Law enforcement has been preparing for legalized marijuana for months. Their officers have been trained how to detect if people are under the influence of marijuana. Marijuana will be treated just like any other intoxicant. You shouldn't be driving after you smoke anymore than you should be driving after taking pain medication … [Read more...]

How to talk to cops…

Knowing that I work as a criminal defense attorney, many people ask me how I feel about law enforcement, or how I feel about recent national news. As a former Deputy District Attorney with the County of Ventura, I had the exceptional opportunity to work side by side with many of our sworn protectors and have a unique appreciation for what they do on a daily basis to keep us safe. While I'm happy to give you my opinion, I think the more practical response is to give you some pointers on what you can do if you have an encounter with law enforcement.  Every case is different, but these are some … [Read more...]

Hovering in 2016

We hope that you had a very happy and safe New Years, and your 2016 is off to a great start! Every year, there are TONS of new laws that are put on the books. I'm not going to cover them all, but I'm sending you a few of the more interesting and/or impactful of them to be aware of:   1. Movie Accurate: If you've ever seen the 1989 movie "Back to the Future II", you know that when they travel to the "Future" (aka 2015) that ALL the cool kids are riding hover-boards. I don't know how they predicted this development in modern culture, but hover-boards became so significant last year … [Read more...]
